What is Viagra?

The big deal with pleasure: The pharmaceutical group Pfizer, who developed the tablet, still expects billions in sales. In the US alone, the potency pill for the man is prescribed more than 100,000 times a week.

Viagra is a drug developed by the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer, which was originally tested for heart failure. However, it surprisingly led to more intense erections in many subjects. So far, patients with erectile dysfunction had to inject a drug directly into the penis erectile tissue. Viagra eliminates this injection. Viagra is taken as a tablet about 1 hour before the planned sexual activity and supports the natural penis erection – if a sexual arousal is felt. Viagra contains the substance sildenafil. This circulation-enhancing substance was discovered as a “waste product” in cardiac research.

Effects of Viagra

Viagra intervenes in the interplay of feelings, hormones, muscles and bloodstreams necessary for an erection. If the brain reports sexual arousal, a substance is produced in the penile musculature of the penis, which causes the muscles to relax and more blood to flow into the erectile tissue. At the same time, the veins are narrowing to prevent blood backflow. The penis becomes stiff in this way. Later, after orgasm, an enzyme normally causes the blood to return, and the erection goes back. Here, Viagra intervenes and prevents the penis from slackening.

Potency problems

The effect of Viagra starts about 25 minutes after ingestion and can last up to four hours – but on average about one hour. The dosage of Viagra should be limited to one tablet a day, otherwise headaches and other side effects such as blurred vision may occur. Viagra has only been tested over a period of one year. For example, it is not yet possible to estimate the impact of taking it over several years, for example.

Risks of Viagra

Scientists generally rate Viagra positively, but also see risks. The Hamburg urologist Prof. Porst has been working on the issue of impotence for 18 years and was working on a Viagra study. Basically, he considers Viagra to be a very good drug, which, however, also brings with it many dangers: eg. For example, there is a risk of abuse when a man is prescribed Viagra and passes it on to friends “because it worked so well.” This leads to an irresponsible, uncontrolled intake, which can also be fatal. Prof. Lunglmayer, head of the urology department at an Austrian hospital and employee of the Pfizer study: “Viagra is a therapy for male impotence, a drug and not a sexual enhancer.”

The US researcher Robert Shay from Los Angeles says: “With Viagra you will not become a 21-year-old, but it actually solves the problem”. Shay had participated in the clinical trials, which certified the compound with a success rate of 70 to 80 percent with few tolerable side effects. However, some problematic facts have now become known. The “TIME” magazine reported in 1998 that every 10th man had a headache and reported about 3% vision problems. Men who take Viagra with nitroglycerin or other medicines for high blood pressure can pass out or be in shock.

There is a risk that men with inflammation of the urethra, leukemia or sickle cell anemia may get an erection lasting several hours or more (called priapism) when taking Viagra. Failure to do so may result in tissue damage and even permanent impotence. And sometimes, impotence is an early sign of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Taking Viagra may obscure these life-threatening conditions. In the meantime, more than 20 deaths have been reported in the US by patients (mostly older, over 60) who took Viagra. A direct and sole cause by the potency pill, however, could not be proved.

Attention

Viagra should never be taken with nitrates and NO donors (vasodilator drugs such as molsidomine, nitroprusside sodium poppers). Patients suffering from cardiovascular disease must consult with the attending physician before using Viagra. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland Viagra is prescription and must be prescribed by the doctor. On the internet, however, are increasingly providers in which man can order Viagra online. The directory DINO already has 10 direct suppliers for Viagra.
